In 1976, Pierre Mazeaud contacted journalist and FIS member Serge Lang for an inquiry assignment aimed at finding a solution to the French ski crisis. In May, the findings of its work were debated. In particular, the work explained the drop in numbers and FFS results by an increase in skiing as a recreational activity, on which the economic interests of manufacturers and resorts were henceforth focused. In this context, Serge Lange acknowledged that ‘the former partners [of the FFS] have become its rivals, and skiing as a sport has ceased to be the advertising driving force for resorts, being rather considered now as a hindrance to intensive touristic skiing’.88 The solutions advocated by Pierre Mazeaud were many in number, but one of them at least directly concerned relations between the FFS and manufacturers, and proposed the coexistence of two parallel organizations:
